All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors. However, we may receive compensation from retailers and/or from purchases of products through these links.
The clean beauty space has often been compared to the Wild West. With a lack of government regulation or industry-wide standardization, essentially any product can hit the shelves labeled as “clean” (“green” or “eco-friendly”… don’t get us started). The door for misinformation and marketing ploys, pseudoscience, and snake oils is basically left wide open. If clean beauty is the Wild West, however, our Allure Clean Standard is the sheriff. Developed with the help of toxicologists, dermatologists, and chemists, our standard sets strict parameters on the ingredients a product cannot contain to be called “clean.” That way, whenever we use the C-word, it’s crystal clear what exactly that means.
Just like every clean product recommended by Allure, the 25 Best of Beauty Award winners you see here are entirely free of the following ingredients: parabens, phthalates, cyclic silicones, sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, polyethylene and polypropylene (microbeads), triclosan, talc, aluminum salts, mineral oil, petrolatum, hydroquinone, formaldehyde, toluene, and chemical UV filters. Spanning across the makeup, hair, body, and skin categories, the winners don’t compromise on performance or efficacy, also meeting our discerning editors’ ridiculously high standard of “best.”
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, you can enjoy scrolling through these superlative products with complete ingredient-list clarity, from the vegan growth factor serum that plumps to the gourmand fragrance with alcohol made from organic sugarcane. Whether or not you’re a dyed-in-the-wool clean beauty shopper, they are well worth a look.
Products that meet our standard are formulated without parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, cyclic silicones, aluminum salts, hydroquinone, triclosan, talc, mineral oil, petrolatum, formaldehyde, toluene, microbeads, and chemical sunscreen filters (oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate).

Youth to the People Superfruit Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser
Best Clean Skin-Care
Youth to the People Superfruit Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser
Amazon
Why It Won: With ginger root, papaya, yerba maté, and vitamin C, the ingredient list of Youth to the People Superfruit Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser sounds like the menu at a fancy juice bar. And while those are all great at refreshing your skin (and your senses … the citrusy scent is ah-mazing), it’s the stuff you’d hear about at your dermatologist’s office—lactic, glycolic, phytic, and salicylic acids—that really clears pores and removing dead skin cells, resulting in smoother, brighter, clearer skin after every wash.
Tester feedback from associate visuals editor Giancarlos Kunhardt
LargeChevron
“This cleanser is great for when I need extra skin-brightening benefits outside of my serums. I also love that, for an exfoliating cleanser, it’s surprisingly gentle and doesn’t strip skin of moisture.” —Giancarlos Kunhardt, associate visuals editor
True Botanicals Chebula Multi-Corrective Eye Patches
Best Clean Skin-Care
True Botanicals Chebula Multi-Corrective Eye Patches
Amazon
Why It Won: Long used in Ayurvedic medicine, chebula comes from a fruit native to India, among other countries, that’s chock-full of flavonoids and antioxidants, including vitamins C. As the star ingredient in the biodegradable True Botanicals Chebula Multi-Corrective Eye Patches—alongside the perhaps more familiar caffeine and sodium hyaluronate—it helps firm, brighten, depuff, and hydrate the undereye area, making it the perfect premakeup treatment (especially since our testers found the pretty gold patches don’t slip and slide down your cheeks like some other overly slimy gels).
Tester feedback from executive beauty director Jenny Bailly
LargeChevron
“I was late to the whole eye patch thing, but these slick little gel numbers really sold me. I slide them on when I wake up in the morning, and they stay put while I make coffee, lunches, etc. When it’s time to do my makeup, my eyes look refreshed and my concealer goes on much more smoothly. And I love that they don’t generate more beauty trash: Just run them under warm water for a few seconds and they dissolve down the drain.” —Jenny Bailly, executive beauty director
InnBeauty Project Elastic Skin Firming & Plumping Vegan Growth Factor Serum
Best Clean Skin-Care
InnBeauty Project Elastic Skin Firming & Plumping Vegan Growth Factor Serum
Sephora
Why It Won: Everything about the InnBeauty Project Elastic Skin Firming & Plumping Vegan Growth Factor Serum is bouncy. The pump is so springy, you can almost hear it go bo-ing as it dispenses product. The lilac-colored formula feels slick and stretchy as you spread it over your face, similar to the texture of snail mucin. And best of all is the way its cocktail of growth factors, peptides, collagen amino acids, and wild yam extract comes together to bring baby cheeks–levels of plumpness to your skin.
Tester feedback from associate beauty director Sarah Kinonen
LargeChevron
“I’ve begun to lose count, but I think I’ve gone through three of four of these bottles over the last year. The InnBeauty serum’s sticky, stringy texture feels amazing on skin (trust me), but it’s the taut results that keep me coming back for more (and more and more)." —Sarah Kinonen, associate beauty director
Muri Lelu Grass Nuit Rebirth Retinoid
Best Clean Skin-Care
Muri Lelu Grass Nuit Rebirth Retinoid
Muri Lelu
Why It Won: For anyone who flushes at the mere mention of retinol, the Muri Lelu Grass Nuit Rebirth Retinoid might be the serum that gets you glowing instead of going red (and flaky and uncomfortable). In addition to 1% granactive retinoid (a synthetic form of vitamin A that some studies have shown to be gentler than others), it contains barrier-repairing ingredients like ceramides and niacinamide, and calming botanicals such as sea mayweed, aloe, and cannabis sativa. The result is a formula that actually soothes redness as it smoothes and tones the skin.
Tester feedback from content director Kara McGrath

“My face loved this serum. After just one use, I woke up the next morning with the redness in my skin totally gone and my complexion looking bright.” —Kara McGrath, content director
Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream
Best Clean Skin-Care
Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream
Sephora
Why It Won: We can’t scientifically prove it, but we’re pretty sure skin makes an “ahhhhhh” sound every time you slather the Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream over your face and neck. The buttery-rich cream brings relief to dry or dehydrated skin with all the ingredients you need for a strong barrier—lipids, ceramides, shea butter, peptides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin—and none of the ones that dermatologists say might disrupt it (fragrance, essential oils).
Tester feedback from shopping market editor Angela Trakoshis
LargeChevron
“My skin drinks this moisturizer up like a tall glass of water. It’s rich without being heavy, and the texture melts in like a dream. It’s my go-to when my skin needs a reset, or is just feeling extra dry. Every time I use it, my skin feels instantly soothed and replenished.” —Angela Trakoshis, shopping market editor
Sonsie Multi Moisture Cream

Sonsie Multi Moisture Cream
Sonsie
Shopping director Shanna Shipin applies the Sonsie Multi Moisture Cream.
Why It Won: Glycerin is an ingredient that dermatologists absolutely love and marketers love to avoid since it’s neither sexy nor newsworthy (it’s been used in skin care for what feels like forever). The thing is, it’s excellent at keeping your skin hydrated. The Sonsie Multi Moisture Cream contains 12% glycerin—a fact the brand, cofounded by Pamela Anderson, is proud to shout about—plus 0.5% hyaluronic acid and shea butter. This makes the multitasker incredibly good at soothing and moisturizing dry, red, and sensitive complexions, whether you use it as a face cream or an overnight mask. Now, that’s what we call sexy.
Tester feedback from senior copy manager Dawn Rebecky
LargeChevron
"You can't make a mistake with this cream. Whether you wear a thin layer of this lightweight formula as moisturizer under makeup (I do so routinely) or lean into its hydration for a 20-minute power mask (I lay it on thick), your skin will look and feel refreshed after. You can even wear it as an overnight mask and still wake up to a clean pillowcase." —Dawn Rebecky, senior copy manager
Innisfree Daily UV Defense Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45
Best Clean Skin-Care
Innisfree Daily UV Defense Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45
Amazon
Why It Won: This mineral sunscreen has an ambitious to-do list: protect, moisturize, soothe, calm, and cover redness, all without a thick, chalky finish. It completes every task with grace. In fact, Innisfree Daily UV Defense Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45 is so elegant, you can almost slap it on and go—the pale-green tint blends away almost immediately, and the formula absorbs quickly, meaning you’re not left with a greasy sheen that can get in the way of your makeup. In our books, that’s a job well done.
Tester feedback from contributing writer Sophia Panych
LargeChevron
“My biggest issue with mineral sunscreens is how they can sometimes interfere with my makeup. I was immediately drawn to this formula, not just because as someone with mild rosacea, I love anything that neutralizes redness, but also because when it dries down, it doesn’t leave a greasy film or chalky residue, meaning it doesn’t get in the way or react funny with anything you layer on top of it." —Sophia Panych, contributing writer
Biossance Pro-Peptide Lip Perfector
Best Clean Skin-Care
Biossance Pro-Peptide Lip Perfector
Amazon
Managing editor Alessandra Foresto applies the Biossance Pro-Peptide Lip Perfector.
Why It Won: If a regular balm is like a drink of water for your lips, the Biossance Pro-Peptide Lip Perfector is the hydration IV you get after a girls’ night in Vegas. The vegan lip treatment delivers intense moisture via a peptide that smoothes and plumps, as well as hyaluronic acid that nurtures dry skin. And because the HA in this formula is encapsulated, releasing slowly over time, its hydrating effects last longer. Choose from clear (H2Glow), Blush Quartz (sheer strawberry), and Supernova (plum).
Tester feedback from managing editor Alessandra Foresto
LargeChevron
“There’s just something about the hydrating ingredient mix in this subtly vanilla-scented vegan balm that gives it the perfect silky texture and makes my lips feel (and I never use this word) supple. My one complaint: It only comes in clear, pink, and berry—I’m going to need more shades.” —Alessandra Foresto, managing editor

Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hair Oil
Best Clean Hair-Care
Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hair Oil
Amazon
Why It Won: Inspired by the centuries-old Ayurvedic ritual of hair oiling, Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hair Oil intensely moisturizes strands and soothes the scalp. It uses dashmool and ashwagandha—both popular Ayurvedic ingredients that have been incorporated into Indian hair care—as well as a potent blend of castor, olive fruit, jojoba, grape seed, and sesame oils. Our testers fell in love with how clean it makes their scalp feel, how shiny it makes their hair look, and the fact that it forces them to take five to 10 minutes to disconnect and treat themselves to a relaxing head massage before washing it out or heading to bed.
Tester feedback from features director Dianna Singh
LargeChevron
“A couple times a month, I apply a few drops of Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hair Oil on my part about 10 minutes before shampooing—and it always makes a difference in how clean my scalp feels postwash. And the scent—with cedarwood and Indian jasmine sambac—is so relaxing.” —Dianna Singh, features director
LolaVie Exfoliate & Detox Scalp Shampoo
Best Clean Hair-Care
LolaVie Exfoliate & Detox Scalp Shampoo
Amazon
Why It Won: LolaVie Exfoliate & Detox Scalp Shampoo packs a one-two-three punch to clean congested scalps. Both a physical and chemical exfoliator, the gritty gray formula uses activated charcoal to help soak up oil and grease, alpha hydroxy acids to exfoliate dead skin cells, and very gentle scrubby bits to help break down flakes and product buildup. You end up with a clean, happy scalp that’s more soothed than squeaky, and strands that are soft and silky.
Tester feedback from senior news editor Nicola Dall’Asen
LargeChevron
“Despite the number of times I’ve heard ‘Defying Gravity’ this year, my perpetually limp hair hasn't learned to follow along. LolaVie's scalp shampoo has certainly helped, though. Its double-whammy physical and chemical exfoliation rids my hair of buildup, leaving cleaner—and therefore bouncier—hair behind." —Nicola Dall’Asen, senior news editor
Reverie Hymn Hair Gel
Best Clean Hair-Care
Reverie Hymn Hair Gel
Amazon
Why It Won: We don’t normally compose songs about our styling products, but paeans could definitely be written about the multipurpose Reverie Hymn Hair Gel. The silky, non-tacky gel gives drooping curls bounce, limp strands volume, and slicked-back styles immense hold and shine, without breaking down into white flakes halfway through the day. And because it’s free of alcohol, silicones, parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrances, clean-beauty lovers can also sing its praises.
Tester feedback from contributing writer Sophia Panych
LargeChevron
“I take ballet class regularly, so I need to slick back my long, layered hair…and slick it back perfectly. (Ask anyone who’s stood at a barre before and they’ll tell you, one hair out of place can make the difference between a good class and a god-awful one.) This gel might feel silky, but it’s strong, keeping short layers and baby hairs locked down. And best of all, my hair looks glossy, never flaky, and when I pull out my ponytail at the end of class, it doesn’t feel like it might snap right off—in fact, a brush goes through it easily." —Sophia Panych, contributing writer

Milk Makeup Hydro Grip + Glow Primer
Amazon
Why It Won: A firm favorite among Allure editors and readers, Milk Makeup's Hydro Grip + Glow Primer is like if your hyaluronic acid serum had extra makeup-gripping powers. This glowy formula is so long-lasting, we scanned the ingredient list for superglue, only to find lots of plant extracts and good-for-your-skin ingredients. Alongside blue agave extract—which grips your makeup, helping it stay put all day long—there’s aloe water, niacinamide, hemp seed extract, and hyaluronic acid that leave skin feeling soothed and moisturized.

Sephora
Merit Beauty
Why It Won: If you did a blind test of Merit’s The Uniform Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45, we bet you’d be shocked to discover it’s a heavy-duty physical sunscreen and not a hydrating, SPF-free skin tint. Available in 15 shades, the elegant formula offers broad-spectrum sun protection and buildable coverage that looks completely seamless when blended over your skin with fingers or a brush (yes, even when you use the recommended 1/4 teaspoon). And while lots of tinted mineral sunscreens look overly cakey or leave behind a shine that borders on sweaty, the way the pigments are dispersed (a proprietary technology that means the zinc oxide and the colors blend together instead of separating) ensures your skin just looks healthy and hydrated. Needless to say, The Uniform has become a permanent staple in many of our editors’ daily makeup wardrobes.
Tester feedback from shopping director Shanna Shipin
LargeChevron
“I think it's fair to say that I'm a mineral sunscreen connoisseur—after making the switch years ago from chemical—and I've never used a tinted sunscreen that feels or wears as luxuriously as this product from Merit. It feels more like a tinted moisturizer than an SPF—and perhaps even more like a serum than a moisturizer! It's truly weightless, dries down to a lovely glowy (but not greasy!) finish, and evens out my skin tone with buildable coverage.” —Shanna Shipin, shopping director

With a chunky handle, shortened wand, and baby-curve brush, it’s comfortable to hold and is the first mascara to receive the Arthritis Foundation’s Ease of Use certification. Tester feedback from commerce editor Sarah Han and executive beauty director Jenny Bailly
LargeChevron
“Face Flex is only one out of two concealers I've been using throughout this entire year—it's that good. It melts into my skin, leaving behind even coverage that hides redness and dark spots so well, I’ve been skipping foundation altogether. I hate heavy formulas that cake underneath my eyes or around my nose, and this simply doesn’t do that. Whereas other concealers disappear as soon as I start blending, I get beautiful coverage with one layer of Face Flex, regardless of whether I use a sponge or a brush.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor
Executive beauty director Jenny Bailly, a proud Gen-Xer, wholeheartedly cosigns all of the above. She’s rarely used another concealer—and only when forced—for the better part of a year.

Why It Won: The Hourglass Phantom Volumizing Glossy Balm is possibly the most comfortable thing you can put on your lips—just ask our editors or the tens of thousands of fans on TikTok. A gloss-balm hybrid, this emollient- and oil-infused pigment melts over lips, leaving behind a juicy, tinted gloss that can be built up to achieve the opacity of a sheer lipstick. Whether or not you layer it over liner, the beauty of the Glossy Balm is that it makes lips look ridiculously plump and pronounced on its own.
Tester feedback from says commerce producer Sarah Hoffmann
LargeChevron
“Hourglass's chic packaging cannot be ignored, but I'd love this balm even if it were in the clunkiest, most cumbersome component known to man. The color range is perfect, to the point where I regularly have at least two of these in my bag because I cannot pick a favorite (but right now, the rosy Slip 125 and Secret 85, a slightly deeper shade with a hint of sparkle, are my go-tos, don't tell the rest). There's a subtle tingle when you apply it, but it's nowhere near painful, and the juicy result is completely worth the squeeze.” —Sarah Hoffmann, commerce producer

What does the word “clean” mean in Allure’s Best of Beauty Awards?
In the context of beauty, the word actually "clean" means nothing. So, in 2019, Allure created its own clean standard, analyzing the research, talking to experts on all sides (toxicologists, dermatologists, chemists), and determining which ingredients we think a clean beauty product should not contain.
There are ingredients that can pose health risks (phthalates, formaldehyde), and others that are just potentially irritating to some (certain sulfates). In total, we determined 14 ingredient classes clean products should not contain. To win an Allure Best of Beauty Clean award, a product cannot contain any of the offending ingredients to even be considered.
The 14 ingredient classes include: chemical sunscreens, parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, cyclic silicones, polyethylene and polypropylene (microbeads), aluminum salts, hydroquinone, triclosan, talc, mineral oil, petrolatum, formaldehyde, and toluene.
Are Clean winners free of fragrance, sulfates, and parabens?
All of the Best of Beauty Clean winners are free of parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, and sodium laureth sulfates, as well as the 12 other ingredient classes listed above. Some of the Clean winners do contain fragrance. After consulting with toxicologists, dermatologists, and chemists, we determined that products can contain fragrance and still be considered clean. If you are looking for more fragrance-free products, check out our 2025 Best of Beauty Sensitive Skin winners.
Are Allure’s Clean winners as effective as traditional options?
Yes. Every Best of Beauty Clean winner has earned its award based on our testers’ results after weeks or months of use. Whether it’s a serum that’s formulated with a gentler retinol or a deodorant that uses vegetable enzymes to eliminate odor, these products are thoroughly vetted by our large number of testers. We consider each product’s performance in terms of ingredients and efficacy, packaging, and user experience (including texture and wear), and have determined that it excels in its specific category.
What kinds of beauty products are included in the Clean category?
Clean winners span makeup, skin-, hair-, and body-care categories. The key factor here is whether the product meets our rigorous and definitive clean standard (detailed above) while offering exceptional and impressive results.
Are the Clean winners cruelty-free or vegan?
It’s not a requirement—Allure’s clean standard focuses on each ingredient’s potential health risk and/or its ability to irritate the skin—but all of the Best of Beauty Clean winners are cruelty-free, and the majority of them are vegan.
Like what you see from Allure's Best of Beauty Awards?
